In her unconscious moments
she called for me
over and over
I went to visit her on weekends
to put ice chips in her mouth
whisper soothing words
in her ear and
tell her how loved she was
Often while I was there
with a sudden twist and turn
she would wake up suddenly
and scream, eyes blazing
with a fire that could only be
created from anger and despair
"Hell hath no fury like a woman scorned"
over and over
she spoke her private shame
and I was her witness to
her unfinished business
She did not go into the night gently
but fought and pushed
with all her might
Darkness was demons, ghosts and pain
Not sweet comfort and hazy dreams
She resisted with all of her might
When all of her organs
began shutting down
She breathed her last breath
Body arching up, eyes open
A gasp escaped from her mouth
Even in the moment when
Death came knocking
She did not believe
it would dare come
for her
